# Cleer vs CleanMyMac

CleanMyMac is a full maintenance suite. Cleer is a smaller native cleaner that lists files, explains why they can go, then waits for confirmation. This page matches current Cleer behavior against CleanMyMac's public product page.

## Buying

### Price

- **Cleer:** $13.99 once. Launch code CLEER50 is 50% off at Stripe. Future updates included.
- **CleanMyMac:** Public page lists pricing starting at $3.33/month. MacPaw also sells monthly, yearly, and one-time licenses.

### License

- **Cleer:** One Mac per purchase. Unbind in Settings, then bind again after a reinstall or a new Mac.
- **CleanMyMac:** Plans scale by number of Macs. Setapp and the Mac App Store are extra storefronts.

### Trial

- **Cleer:** No trial gate. 7-day refund after purchase.
- **CleanMyMac:** 7-day trial on the public page.

### macOS

- **Cleer:** macOS 13 Ventura or later. Apple silicon and Intel.
- **CleanMyMac:** macOS 11 or later. Minimum display 1200x800. About 320 MB to install.

## How cleanup works

### Default flow

- **Cleer:** Scan, review a readable list, then confirm. Smart Clean splits items into suggested, needs review, and will not auto-clean.
- **CleanMyMac:** Smart Care runs five routines in one pass: deep clean, threat scan, performance boost, software update, and declutter.

### What you see first

- **Cleer:** Paths, reasons, size vs disk use vs reclaimable space. Quick Look and Finder from the review list.
- **CleanMyMac:** Summary-first maintenance. You can still inspect items, but the marketed path is one Smart Care run.

### Deletion

- **Cleer:** Preview never deletes. Smart Clean and category cleanup default to permanent delete, with Trash as a setting. Uninstall, duplicates, installers, projects, storage, and iCloud always use Trash.
- **CleanMyMac:** Cleanup is behind review in the app. The public pitch is still a single care routine that includes junk, threats, and updates.

### Safety defaults

- **Cleer:** System files skipped by default. Source trees are not suggested for project cleanup. High-risk rows start unchecked.
- **CleanMyMac:** MacPaw advertises a safety database and that it does not delete without asking.

## Cleanup coverage

### Caches, logs, junk

- **Cleer:** User caches, logs, browser leftovers, developer caches, crash reports, Trash. Running browsers are skipped.
- **CleanMyMac:** System junk and hidden clutter are a core Smart Care job. MacPaw cites an average 5.5 GB on a first scan.

### Uninstall

- **Cleer:** App bundle plus leftovers: support files, caches, containers, login items. System apps stay off by default. Always Trash.
- **CleanMyMac:** Uninstall leftover data and update other software from the same product family.

### Duplicates

- **Cleer:** Exact content match only. Same name is not enough. Each group keeps at least one copy. Cleanup goes to Trash.
- **CleanMyMac:** Duplicate files plus similar photos. Broader clutter tools, not hash-only matching.

### Large files and storage

- **Cleer:** Pick a folder, see heavy items, trash one at a time. Local space history shows what grew and what cleanup changed.
- **CleanMyMac:** Clutter and Space Lens style views for large, old, and forgotten files.

### iCloud

- **Cleer:** You pick an iCloud Drive folder. Metadata scan only. No forced download. Delete goes to Trash and follows iCloud.
- **CleanMyMac:** Cloud cleanup for large cloud files and redundant local copies.

### Developer projects

- **Cleer:** Xcode, Node, Python, Rust, Gradle, and similar artifacts, with rebuild notes. Source directories stay protected.
- **CleanMyMac:** Not a first-class project-artifact cleaner. Developer caches may appear inside general junk.

### Installers

- **Cleer:** Dedicated scan of common download locations for dmg, pkg, and related installers.
- **CleanMyMac:** Installation leftovers sit with app management and clutter, not as a dedicated installer inbox.

### Optimize

- **Cleer:** Rebuild caches and related maintenance with a preview. This flow does not delete files.
- **CleanMyMac:** Performance boost, memory and CPU control, and maintenance scripts inside Smart Care.

## Outside cleanup

### Malware

- **Cleer:** Not included. Cleer will not ship antivirus without a dedicated engine.
- **CleanMyMac:** Threat scan is one of the five Smart Care routines. Moonlock engine on the MacPaw site.

### App updater

- **Cleer:** Cleer updates itself. It does not patch your other apps.
- **CleanMyMac:** Software update is part of Smart Care.

### Agents and CLI

- **Cleer:** Optional local cleer CLI and stdio MCP for Cursor, Codex, and Claude Code. Cleanup still needs approval in the app.
- **CleanMyMac:** No public CLI or MCP. Menu bar assistant is the extra surface.

### Languages

- **Cleer:** English and Chinese in the app and on this site.
- **CleanMyMac:** Many locales on the MacPaw site and in the app.

## Who each one is for

### Choose Cleer if

- You want a list of paths and reasons before anything moves.
- Disks fill with repos, installers, and media, not mystery System Data.
- A $13.99 one-time license beats a yearly cleaner subscription.
- You want the same scan engine from the app, a terminal, or an agent.

### Choose CleanMyMac if

- You want junk, malware, RAM-style boost, and app updates in one button.
- Similar photos matter more than exact-hash duplicates.
- You already live in Setapp or want MacPaw's wider product line.
- You need macOS 11 or 12, which Cleer does not support.
